Gate fee dodging

Rules that catch people out

Six things that cost people money at the gate, every single day. Learn them once and you'll stop paying for them.

  1. Measure it with the wheels on

Airlines measure the whole bag. British Airways, Jet2, KLM, Virgin Atlantic and United all say outright that wheels and handles count, and the sizer at the gate doesn't make exceptions.

  2. Free means under the seat

On Ryanair, Wizz Air and easyJet the free bag has to fit under the seat in front. The overhead locker is for the bigger bag you pay for.

  3. Some weights are shared

KLM and Air France give you 12 kg in Economy for your cabin bag and personal item together, not 12 kg each.

  4. Bags are priced per flight

On low-cost airlines you pay for a bag on every flight, so a return trip means paying twice. Add it when you book, because it usually costs more at the airport.

  5. A cabin bag can still end up in the hold

On busy flights your cabin bag can get tagged for the hold at the gate. Jet2 sells Guaranteed Cabin Luggage for exactly that reason.

  6. Power banks stay with you

Spare lithium batteries and power banks go in your hand luggage, never your checked bag. Some airlines now ban using them on board too, so check before you fly.

FAQ

Baggage allowance questions

The short answers. Each airline guide has the full detail.

What size is a standard cabin bag?
There isn't one, which is half the problem. A 55 x 35 x 20 cm bag fits the cabin bag limit of 19 of the 20 airlines in our table, and only Qatar Airways is stricter, with a 50 cm maximum length. The popular 55 x 40 x 20 cm size is too wide for Virgin Atlantic, KLM, Air France, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Delta and United. Run your own bag through the bag checker to be sure.
What size should a free under-seat bag be?
40 x 30 x 15 cm is the safest bet. It fits the free under-seat allowance of every airline in our table that sets a size, apart from Aer Lingus (33 x 25 x 20 cm) and United (43 x 25 x 22 cm). Our Emirates, Qatar Airways and Delta guides don't list a set size, so keep it small enough to slide under the seat in front.
Which airlines include a cabin bag on the cheapest fare?
Of the 20 airlines in our table, 10 do: Jet2, TUI, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Lufthansa, Iberia, Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways and Delta. Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air, Vueling, Eurowings, Pegasus and Aer Lingus only include the free under-seat bag on their cheapest fare. With KLM, Air France and United it depends on the fare and the route.
Do the sizes include wheels and handles?
Assume they do. British Airways, Jet2, KLM, Virgin Atlantic and United all say so outright, and the bag sizer at the gate doesn't make exceptions for wheels.
How heavy can a cabin bag be?
Anywhere from 7 kg to 23 kg. Emirates and Qatar Airways allow 7 kg in Economy. Lufthansa, Eurowings, Pegasus and Turkish Airlines allow 8 kg. Ryanair, Wizz Air, Vueling, Jet2 and TUI allow 10 kg, easyJet allows 15 kg for its large cabin bag, and British Airways allows 23 kg. KLM and Air France give you 12 kg for your cabin bag and personal item combined.
Do I pay for bags on both flights?
On low-cost airlines, yes. Bags are priced per person, per flight, so a return trip means buying the bag twice. It's usually cheaper to add it when you book than at the airport.
How up to date is this page?
The figures in the table were checked against our individual airline guides on 22 October 2026. Airlines change their bag rules more often than you'd think, so check your booking before you pack, and use the airline's own guide for fees and checked bags.
