FAQs
Do I really need a packing list?
Not need, but it saves you from the classic “toothbrush in another country” situation. A list stops overpacking, stops forgetting boring essentials, and makes last-minute packing way less chaotic.
What should always go in my carry-on?
Anything you’d cry about if your checked bag vanished:
passport/ID + cards, phone + charger, meds, one change of underwear, a spare top, basic toiletries (within limits), keys, and anything valuable (camera, laptop, jewellery).
What liquids are allowed at airport security?
Generally: liquids, gels and aerosols in containers up to 100ml each, all inside one clear bag (usually up to 1 litre), and you take it out at security. Big exceptions exist (like baby food/medical), and some airports have newer scanners, but you can’t rely on it yet. When in doubt, pack it like the old rules.
Can I bring power banks and batteries on a plane?
Usually yes, but power banks/spare lithium batteries should go in your carry-on, not checked luggage. Airlines can have different limits (especially for high-capacity power banks), so if yours is a chunky one, check your airline’s specific rule.
How do I avoid overweight baggage fees?
The holy trinity:
- Know your airline limit before you pack
- Weigh your bag at home (a luggage scale is elite)
- Wear the heavy stuff (coat, boots) and move dense items to your personal item if allowed
How far ahead should I start packing?
2–3 days before is the sweet spot for most people. It gives you time to do laundry, replace minis, and not panic-pack random nonsense at 1am. If you’re a chronic procrastinator, start with a list a week before and pack in little batches.
What if my checked bag gets lost?
Roll: better for casual stuff and saving space, fewer hard creases.
Fold: better for structured items (blazers, dress shirts).
Real-world winner: roll tees/underwear, fold smart clothes, and use packing cubes so your bag doesn’t explode like a popped can of biscuits.
