This is a planning tool, not financial advice. Prices move all the time. Always confirm real costs with airlines, hotels and providers before you book.

Quick start

How to use it

Five short steps from blank page to a budget you actually trust.

Some links on this page are affiliate links. If you book through them we may earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you.

1

Add your trip basics

Destination, days, number of travellers and your currency.

2

Pick a travel style

Budget, mid-range or luxury, to pre-fill sensible estimates.

3

Fill in totals per category

Or overwrite the estimates with your own real numbers.

4

Add a contingency

A small safety net, 10 to 15%, that saves big headaches.

5

Save, copy or email it

Keep your summary, share it, or send it to yourself.

Good to know: travelling as a couple or family? Enter shared costs like hotels and car hire as totals, and per-person stuff like food and tickets as totals too. The calculator splits it cleanly for you.

The calculator

Build your trip budget

Add your basics, pick a style, then fine-tune every category below. Your totals update as you type.

Trip basics

Fills mid-range estimates. Anything you type over stays put.

Travel style

Expenses, total cost per category

Estimates fill themselves and follow your days and travellers. Type over any box and it turns blue, meaning that one is yours and will not be overwritten.

Sanity check

What a week actually costs

These are the exact figures the calculator starts you on, so you can sanity-check your own numbers before you fill anything in. All per person, excluding flights, and all in pounds because the calculator converts for you.

LuxuryBoutique or four-star, restaurants every night, private tours£430£3,010 / €3,461 / $4,033

Tinker's Tip: None of these include flights, and that is deliberate. Flights swing so wildly by route, season and how far ahead you book that a single average would be useless. Get a real quote first, put it in the flights box, and build the rest around it.

Money saver: Look at that last column. Accommodation is a third to over 40% of a mid-range daily budget everywhere on that list, which makes it the only line worth really attacking. Shifting your dates by a fortnight, or moving one Tube stop further out, does more for the total than skipping lunches ever will.

Good to know: These are planning estimates, not researched prices, and they move with the season. Treat them as a starting shape and replace each one with a real quote as you book. Every box you type into turns blue in the calculator, which is how you can see at a glance how much of your budget is real and how much is still guesswork. Figures indicative as of September 2026.

Make it stretch

Spend less, enjoy more

Book your big fixed costs first (transport and stay), then build the daily budget around them.
Add contingency early, so you don't pretend you're a robot who never misses a train.
If your daily number feels spicy, drop one or two paid activities and upgrade the food instead.
The truth: most trips go over budget from lots of small stuff, not one giant disaster. Track the little things.
Good questions

Budget calculator FAQs

Is this budget calculator official?
No, it's a planning tool to help you estimate costs. Always confirm prices with airlines, hotels and providers before you book anything.
Why do my results change when I edit one thing?
Because the totals, daily averages and per-person cost all update instantly as you adjust any input. It's meant to be played with.
Does this include exchange rates?
Not live ones. You can pick a currency to work in, but check your bank or a converter for today's actual rate before you rely on it.
What if I'm travelling with kids or a group?
Use totals for shared costs like accommodation and car hire, and totals for group spending like food and attractions. The per-person figure still gives you a useful number.
What should I set the contingency fund to?
10 to 15% is a solid default for most trips. Push it higher if you're going in peak season or somewhere remote where surprises cost more.
How much should a week away actually cost?
Excluding flights and per person, budget travel runs around £60 a day, mid-range about £156 and luxury around £430. Over a week that is roughly £420 / €483 / $563 budget, £1,092 / €1,256 / $1,463 mid-range and £3,010 / €3,462 / $4,033 luxury. Destination matters enormously on top of that: mid-range Bangkok sits around £75 a day while Reykjavik is nearer £218. The table further up this page lists fifteen destinations, and those are the exact figures the calculator starts you on. Figures indicative as of September 2026.
Do my estimates update when I change the trip length?
Yes. Change the days or the number of travellers and every estimate recalculates straight away. The one exception is any box you have typed in yourself, which turns blue and is then left alone, because your real quote beats our estimate every time. Hit reset if you want the estimates back.
Why does my total change when I switch currency?
It should not, and it no longer does. Switching currency converts every figure you have entered at the rates shown, rather than leaving the numbers where they are and relabelling them. You can edit those rates yourself, and everything on the page follows whatever you put in.
Does it include flights?
Not in the estimates, no, and that is on purpose. Flight prices swing so far by route, season and booking window that any average would be misleading. Get a real quote, drop it into the flights box, and build the rest of the budget around it.
Can I print it or email it to myself?
Both. The print button strips out the form, the buttons and the affiliate links and gives you just the summary and the breakdown, which also works as save-to-PDF. The email button opens your mail app with the whole summary already written. Save budget keeps it in this browser so it is still there when you come back.
