TogglePlanning your next adventure? Here at The Travel Tinker, we get it, the promise of a dreamy destination can be hard to resist. But let’s face it, some places just don’t live up to the hype! Whether it’s overcrowded streets, overpriced attractions, or just underwhelming experiences, there are plenty of travel spots that leave us scratching our heads. In this guide, we’re spilling the tea on the 10 overhyped travel spots you might want to skip and suggesting hidden gems that are totally worth your time instead.
1. Times Square, New York City, USA
Ok, Ok, don’t shoot the messenger… Times Square, the “crossroads of the world.” But is it really worth braving the crowds and flashing billboards? The constant hustle and bustle can feel overwhelming, and many find it lacks the authentic charm of New York. Add in overpriced eateries and a sea of tourists, and it’s easy to see why some leave disappointed.
Alternative:
Wander through Brooklyn’s DUMBO neighbourhood for stunning skyline views and a laid-back vibe. You can also explore The High Line, an elevated park offering a mix of greenery, art, and unique city perspectives.

2. Santorini, Greece
Dreaming of those Insta-worthy blue domes? Trust me, so is everyone else! Santorini is often packed to the brim with tourists, leading to skyrocketing prices and long waits at popular spots. Its over-commercialisation means you may miss the authentic Greek island experience you’re seeking.
Alternative:
Head to Milos, another Greek island boasting serene beaches and fewer crowds, offering a true slice of paradise. Or explore Naxos, which combines natural beauty with authentic Greek culture.

3. The Hollywood Walk of Fame, Los Angeles, USA
You might want to give this a miss! Star-struck travellers often flock here, only to find cracked sidewalks and a bustling sea of street vendors. I found that the sheer lack of glamour and the overwhelming crowds make it hard to enjoy the experience.
Alternative:
Visit Griffith Observatory for breathtaking views of LA and the Hollywood sign. You could also check out LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) for a mix of art and iconic urban backdrops.

4. The Great Wall of China, Badaling Section
Yes, it’s one of the world’s wonders, but the Badaling section is often overrun with tourists and selfie sticks. The congestion and lack of serenity can detract from the majesty of this historic site.
Alternative:
Opt for the quieter Jinshanling section, where you can soak in the Wall’s majesty without the chaos. Another great choice is the Mutianyu section, which offers restored paths and fewer crowds.

5. Bali’s Kuta Beach, Indonesia
Bali is magical, but Kuta Beach? Not so much. It’s crowded and commercialised, often plagued by litter and relentless street vendors. The charm of Bali gets lost in this hectic environment.
Alternative:
Escape to Nusa Penida or Amed Beach for pristine waters and tranquillity. If you’re looking for something even more secluded, try Pemuteran in the north for incredible snorkelling and local charm.
6. The Mona Lisa at the Louvre, Paris, France
I love Paris but one thing that really annoyed me was the amount of people there to see a painting, a painting! Obviously the thought of seeing the Mona Lisa sounds glamorous, until you’re elbowing your way through hordes of tourists to catch a glimpse of the tiny painting. The underwhelming size and the chaotic crowd can make the experience frustrating rather than enjoyable.
Alternative:
For a more enriching art experience, visit the Musée d’Orsay, where you’ll find equally stunning works in a calmer setting. Alternatively, explore Musée de l’Orangerie, home to Monet’s mesmerising Water Lilies.

7. Venice, Italy (During Summer)
Venice is magical and definitely one of my favourite places I’ve visited, but during summer? It’s unbearably crowded, with sweltering heat and overpriced gondola rides (over $100 for a quick ride). The overwhelming number of tourists can make it difficult to fully appreciate its charm.
Alternative:
Visit in the off-season or explore Burano (great place), a nearby island known for its colourful houses and charming canals. For a quieter Italian experience, consider Trieste, a coastal city blending Italian and Austrian influences.
Hotels from Around the World
8. Phuket, Thailand
Thailand is stunning, but Phuket’s bustling beaches and nightlife might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Overdevelopment and relentless crowds often leave visitors yearning for a more serene escape.
Alternative:
Swap it for Koh Lanta, an island that offers serene beaches, incredible snorkelling spots, and a relaxing atmosphere. Koh Yao Noi is another fantastic option, known for its unspoiled landscapes and local culture.
9. The Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy
Sure, it’s leaning, but aside from snapping a quirky photo, there’s not much else. The area around the tower is often overcrowded with tourists, and the overall experience can feel underwhelming.
Alternative:
Visit Lucca, a nearby town with stunning medieval architecture and fewer crowds. Another great pick is San Gimignano, famous for its towers and beautiful Tuscan views.

10. Dubai’s Artificial Islands, UAE
While impressive in design, the artificial islands can feel soulless and lack authentic culture. The glitz and glamour often overshadow the deeper, more meaningful experiences travellers seek.
Alternative:
Explore Dubai’s Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, where you’ll find traditional architecture and a glimpse into the city’s past. For a unique desert experience, head to Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve for camel treks and stargazing.
Don’t get me wrong, the world is full of extraordinary places, but not every popular spot lives up to its reputation. By venturing off the beaten path, you’ll discover destinations that are truly unforgettable.
