Quick start

How to use it

Five short steps from blank page to a budget you actually trust.

Some links on this page are affiliate links. If you book through them we may earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you.

1

Add your trip basics

Destination, days, number of travellers and your currency.

2

Pick a travel style

Budget, mid-range or luxury, to pre-fill sensible estimates.

3

Fill in totals per category

Or overwrite the estimates with your own real numbers.

4

Add a contingency

A small safety net, 10 to 15%, that saves big headaches.

5

Save, copy or email it

Keep your summary, share it, or send it to yourself.

Good to know: travelling as a couple or family? Enter shared costs like hotels and car hire as totals, and per-person stuff like food and tickets as totals too. The calculator splits it cleanly for you.

Make it stretch

Spend less, enjoy more

Book your big fixed costs first (transport and stay), then build the daily budget around them.
Add contingency early, so you don't pretend you're a robot who never misses a train.
If your daily number feels spicy, drop one or two paid activities and upgrade the food instead.
The truth: most trips go over budget from lots of small stuff, not one giant disaster. Track the little things.
Good questions

Budget calculator FAQs

Is this budget calculator official?
No, it's a planning tool to help you estimate costs. Always confirm prices with airlines, hotels and providers before you book anything.
Why do my results change when I edit one thing?
Because the totals, daily averages and per-person cost all update instantly as you adjust any input. It's meant to be played with.
Does this include exchange rates?
Not live ones. You can pick a currency to work in, but check your bank or a converter for today's actual rate before you rely on it.
What if I'm travelling with kids or a group?
Use totals for shared costs like accommodation and car hire, and totals for group spending like food and attractions. The per-person figure still gives you a useful number.
What should I set the contingency fund to?
10 to 15% is a solid default for most trips. Push it higher if you're going in peak season or somewhere remote where surprises cost more.
