Brief Overview
The month of September is among our favourites for vacationing. Prices for flights to warm destinations are beginning to drop now that the school year has returned to normal. European temperatures have dropped to a point when turning up the heat is preferable, and the continent is at its natural best . The safari season has officially begun, albeit it is winding down.
September is a fantastic month to hit the road, whether you’re looking for a long weekend with a twist, a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with animals, or a monthlong journey to cross an item off your bucket list.
The Cotswolds, United Kingdom
Although August is marginally more rainy than the rest of Alaska’s summer, the reduced crowds and cheaper rates more than make up for the inconvenience. Denali National Park is teeming with life this month, with grizzly bears eating salmon to bulk up before hibernation joining the likes of caribou, wolves, and golden eagles. They also enjoy the season’s plentiful fruit; blueberries, in particular, are known for being particularly plump and luscious in Alaska. In Palmer, Alaska, the Alaska State Fair celebrates the end of summer with concerts, carnival rides, and delicious fair food.
Nara, Japan
Summer in Japan (July–August) may be stiflingly muggy, while winter (June–July) is, well, rainy. The heat is on in September.
When visiting Nara in the months of October and November, you may look forward to cooler mornings and evenings as well as possibly less tourists crowding the streets.
Although Japan is best renowned for its pastel spring blossoms, the changing leaves in Nara’s stately parks and temple grounds as September bleeds into October are just as beautiful.
Argentina
Mid to late September ushers in springlike weather in Argentina as the country’s chilly winter draws to an end in August and September. Temperatures are unpredictable, but you can usually expect them to be in the pleasant range of 15°C to 20°C.
Argentina’s national parks are especially beautiful in the spring, when new growth emerges from the winter’s cold and snow. This is the time of year when you should plan your trip to northern Argentina.
The city of Buenos Aires is the capital, so you can take your time exploring it. Visit the Mendoza wines, and then take your vacation to the next level by venturing to the northernmost region of Jujuy. Salta, a city in the Andes, is particularly striking for its setting.
Montenegro
Kotor is just as busy as Dubrovnik in the summer, and Montenegro is no longer a hidden gem. The crowds disperse and the fascinating culture and history of this small country are in the spotlight in September, making it an ideal time to visit. Culture vultures should make a beeline for Cetinje (the royal capital) and the formidable Mount Loven, the final resting place of 19th-century prince-poet Njego, while beach bums should head to Perast (just down the road from Kotor).
Lille, France
This attractive and often-overlooked city in northern France offers plenty of charm and potential. Lille boasts some finely sculpted modern architecture, such as the Lille Métropole Museum of Modern, Contemporary, and Outsider Art and the elliptical Stadium Pierre-Mauroy, in addition to its cobblestone streets, Flemish houses, and art nouveau structures. Everyone else should go in September to Europe’s largest flea market, Braderie de Lille, which has turned into a giant street party (design fans may want to wait until December for the WDC street festival). Since 1127, it has continued, and as the old adage goes, “practise makes perfect.”
Chicago, USA
Chicago’s allure stems from the city’s ability to combine big-city grit, culture, and Midwestern warmth. Visit in September to avoid the massive crowds waiting for the Willis Tower elevators and gawking at the art deco Carbide & Carbon Building, both of which feature gold-topped observation decks. Take advantage of the pleasant weather and join the locals at one of Chicago’s many free jazz events this month, such as the Chicago Jazz Festival in Millennium Park at the month’s beginning or the Hyde Park Jazz Festival at the month’s end.
Santorini, Greece
If you were to ask a local of Santorini which month they prefer best, chances are they would choose September. Nights in its up-and-down hillside communities are cooler now that the summer rush has passed, the sea is warmer than ever, and the skies are blue, blue, all day long. Oia glows a golden hue at sunset in September, while the Caldera’s rich blues seem even more vibrant at this time of year.
Scottish Highlands
July and August are the warmest months in the United Kingdom, however September marks the conclusion of Scotland’s high season (starting in May). It’s still acceptable for the season, but a lot quieter than the height of summer. Although though you won’t have the Highlands to yourself, finding a place to sleep will be much less of a hassle.
There has never been a better time to visit one of the UK’s most dramatic and magnificent landscapes, the Highlands, and enjoy activities like hiking, birdwatching, experiencing the plentiful environment, and practising travel photography there.
Venice, Italy
Venice is a popular tourist destination due to its colourful islands and the steady stream of people taking slow (and pricey) gondola rides through the city’s canals.
The city explodes into a different kind of activity in early September, when rowers surround the island and spectators flock to the city to watch the yearly races and take in the colourful opening procession along the canals.
Mexico City, Mexico
Despite its size and chaos, México City has never been hipper. The young, creative spirit of the city is palpable everywhere you go, from the cafés decked out in geometric-print tiles to the urban market in a converted auto parts warehouse serving locally made wares and artisan cocktails made with botanicals grown in the city’s own gardens. Rainy season ends in September, so the always-packed megalopolis sees fewer visitors than usual. Nevertheless, most of them don’t realise that the rain is more likely to fall at night, and in short, intense bursts. At a comfortable 25 degrees, the day is great for strolling the trendy neighbourhood of Roma Norte or snacking on some grilled corn slathered in lime juice straight from a wheelbarrow.
