KLM Baggage Allowance: Essential Guide to Hand Luggage, Checked Bags

Estimated reading time: 11 mins

You know that feeling at check-in when the screen flashes a baggage fee you weren’t expecting? I’ve been there. Twice, actually, both times flying KLM out of Schiphol because I didn’t bother checking which fare I’d booked.

KLM now has four economy-level fares, and the newest one (Economy Basic) barely includes a bag at all. This guide breaks down the full KLM baggage allowance: every fare type, cabin and checked bag sizes, weight limits, fees, and how to dodge the charges that catch people out. Plus what to do if your bag goes missing.

KLM Baggage Allowance: Quick Facts at a Glance

โœ… Cabin bag: 55 x 35 x 25 cm, small bag: 40 x 30 x 15 cm, combined max 12 kg (Economy)

โœ… Economy Basic only includes a small under-seat bag. No cabin bag, no checked bag

โœ… Economy Light includes a cabin bag but no checked bag

โœ… Economy Standard/Flex includes 1 x 23 kg checked bag

โœ… Business Class gets 2 x 32 kg checked bags and 18 kg cabin allowance

โœ… Pre-book extra bags online to save up to 50% vs airport prices

โœ… Overweight fee (23โ€“32 kg) starts at โ‚ฌ75. Over 32 kg? Not accepted at all

โœ… Flying Blue Silver/Gold members get +1 free checked bag (even on Basic/Light fares now)

โœ… Infants on laps get a free 10 kg checked bag plus pushchair

โœ… Biggest mistake: booking Economy Basic thinking it includes a cabin bag. It doesn’t

โœ… Guide is for anyone flying KLM and wanting to avoid baggage fees

๐Ÿ”น Tinker’s Tip: The combined 12 kg cabin weight limit catches people out. That’s your cabin bag and your small bag together, not 12 kg each. Weigh both before you leave the house.

Baggage Allowance Quick Q&As

What is KLM’s hand luggage allowance? Most Economy fares include one cabin bag (55 x 35 x 25 cm) and one small personal item (40 x 30 x 15 cm), combined max 12 kg. Economy Basic only gets the small bag.

How much does an extra checked bag cost on KLM? Around โ‚ฌ25โ€“โ‚ฌ75 for European routes and โ‚ฌ30โ€“โ‚ฌ240 for intercontinental if you book online. At the airport, expect roughly double.

What’s the difference between Economy Basic and Economy Light? Both exclude a free checked bag, but Light includes a full-size cabin bag. Basic only gives you a small under-seat bag.

Can I bring a personal item on top of my cabin bag? Yes, on all fares except Economy Basic. It goes under the seat in front of you.

What happens if my bag is overweight at the airport? Between 23 and 32 kg, you’ll pay a flat fee starting at โ‚ฌ75. Over 32 kg and KLM won’t accept it at all.

Does Flying Blue status give me extra baggage? Yes. Silver/Gold members get one extra free checked bag, Platinum/Ultimate get two. Since February 2026, these perks apply even on Basic and Light fares.

Do I get a free bag for my baby on KLM? Infants on your lap get a free 10 kg checked bag plus a hand bag for baby essentials. Pushchairs and car seats travel free too.

How early should I pre-book extra baggage? At least 24 hours before departure for the best price. You can book via My Trip up to 4 hours before your flight.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Good to know: These answers are current as of 2026. Policies shift, so double-check via My Trip before you fly.

What's actually included in your KLM baggage allowance

KLM Baggage Allowance Made Simple
KLM Baggage Allowance Made Simple

Here’s the thing that trips most people up: KLM has six fare types across Economy, Premium Comfort, and Business, and each one comes with a different baggage deal.

Economy Basic (introduced mid-2025) is the strictest. You get a small under-seat bag and that’s it. No overhead bin, no checked bag. I nearly booked it for a quick Amsterdam to Dublin hop before realising what “Basic” actually meant. Economy Light is slightly better with a cabin bag included, but still no checked luggage.

Economy Standard and Flex are the “normal” tickets. Cabin bag, personal item, one checked bag at 23 kg. Premium Comfort bumps you to two checked bags, and Business gives you 32 kg per bag with an 18 kg cabin limit.

If you’re connecting through Schiphol (which loads of UK travellers do), sort your travel insurance early. If something goes sideways with your bags mid-connection, you’ll want cover in place.

๐Ÿ’ก Fact: Economy Basic’s hand baggage add-on is currently only available on select routes from Amsterdam, including Helsinki, Stockholm, Dublin, Prague, Munich, Vienna, Turin, Florence, and Athens.

Hand luggage rules: sizes, weights, and the 12 kg trap

KLM’s cabin bag limit is 55 x 35 x 25 cm, including handles and wheels. That “including” bit matters. I’ve seen people at Schiphol with bags that only fit the sizer once they yanked the handle down and squashed the wheels flat.

Your personal item can’t exceed 40 x 30 x 15 cm. Think laptop bag, small backpack, or handbag.

The combined weight of both bags is capped at 12 kg for Economy fares. Not 12 kg each. Combined. That’s the trap. I’ve watched people at the gate get pulled aside because their cabin bag alone was 10 kg and their handbag pushed them over.

  • Economy Basic: small bag only (under seat), no cabin bag unless purchased
  • Economy Light / Standard / Flex: 1 cabin bag + 1 small bag, 12 kg combined
  • Premium Comfort: 2 cabin bags + 1 small bag, 12 kg combined
  • Business Class: 2 cabin bags + 1 small bag, 18 kg combined

If you’re departing from the US, TSA rules cap everyone at one cabin bag plus one personal item regardless of class.

๐Ÿ”น Tinker’s Tip: On full flights, KLM sometimes asks passengers to gate-check cabin bags for free. Keep essentials (meds, charger, passport) in your small bag, because that stays with you.

Economy Basic vs Light vs Standard: which fare gets what

This is the section I wish I’d read before my Amsterdam booking. The fare names sound similar, but the baggage gap is massive.

Economy Basic sometimes costs only โ‚ฌ10โ€“โ‚ฌ20 less than Light. But adding a cabin bag and checked bag back costs more than just booking Standard. Always compare the total.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Good to know: On intercontinental flights to the US, Canada, and Asia, even Economy Light passengers typically get a carry-on included. But you still won’t get a free checked bag on Light. Always check “My Trips” for your specific route.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Because we all like to know: Why Flying Is Still the Safest Way to Travel

Checked bag allowance by class and fare

This is where most of the confusion (and surprise fees) happen.

Economy Basic and Light don’t include any checked baggage. Zero. If you need to check a bag, you’re paying extra or booking a higher fare. Economy Standard and Flex include one checked bag at up to 23 kg, max dimensions 158 cm total (length + width + height, including handles and wheels).

Premium Comfort gives you two checked bags at 23 kg each, and Business gets two at 32 kg each. For most holidays, Standard is the sweet spot.

Some routes allow an additional checked bag on Standard and Flex fares, so check My Trip. And if you’re travelling with more than three bags, contact KLM directly. The absolute max is 10 per passenger.

โœ‹๐Ÿผ Must-do: Check your specific route’s baggage allowance in My Trip after booking. Don’t assume it’s the same on every KLM flight.

Extra baggage fees: how much and how to pay less

Right, here’s the bit nobody wants to think about. Extra bag fees vary by route and by when you book.

ScenarioTypical Cost (EUR)How to Reduce It
Extra checked bag (Europe, online)โ‚ฌ25โ€“โ‚ฌ75Book 24+ hours before departure
Extra checked bag (intercontinental, online)โ‚ฌ30โ€“โ‚ฌ240Book online, not at the airport
Extra bag at the airportRoughly double online priceAlways pre-book
Overweight bag 23โ€“32 kg (Europe)โ‚ฌ75โ€“โ‚ฌ100Repack or split into two bags
Overweight bag 23โ€“32 kg (intercontinental)โ‚ฌ75โ€“โ‚ฌ300Weigh bags at home first
Oversized bag over 158 cm (Europe)โ‚ฌ75โ€“โ‚ฌ100Use soft bags, check dimensions
Over 32 kgNot acceptedShip via cargo or luggage service

Prices/Figures correct as of 2026.

The golden rule? Book online, book early. I once paid nearly โ‚ฌ80 at the gate for a bag I could’ve added for โ‚ฌ30 online. That’s a decent meal in Amsterdam wasted.

For context, โ‚ฌ75 is around ยฃ63 / $84, and intercontinental overweight fees of โ‚ฌ300 come out at roughly ยฃ252 / $336.

๐Ÿ”น Tinker’s Tip: Set a phone reminder the night before: “Check bags, add extras online.” Two minutes, could save you ยฃ50+.

Overweight and oversized bags: the fees nobody wants

KLM has a hard stop at 32 kg. If your checked bag weighs more than that, they won’t accept it. No amount of polite asking will change this.

Between 23 and 32 kg, you’ll pay a flat overweight fee (not per-kilo), which ranges from โ‚ฌ75 to โ‚ฌ300 depending on the route. Oversized bags (over 158 cm but under 300 cm) have their own fee of โ‚ฌ75โ€“โ‚ฌ300. Anything over 300 cm goes through Air France KLM Cargo.

Buy a cheap luggage scale. Under ยฃ10, pays for itself on your first trip.

๐Ÿ’ก Fact: The overweight fee is flat, not per-kilogram. A bag at 24 kg costs the same surcharge as one at 31 kg.

Flying Blue perks: free bags and status benefits

KLM’s loyalty programme is actually pretty generous with baggage. Silver and Gold members get one extra free checked bag on KLM and Air France flights. Platinum and Ultimate get two.

The big update: as of 2026, status baggage perks now apply to Economy Basic and Light fares. Previously, you could have Gold status but booking Basic meant no extra bag. That’s changed, which makes cheaper fares much more attractive for frequent flyers.

Even Explorer members get 10% off their first additional checked bag. And you can use Flying Blue miles to add extra baggage via a baggage award.

Travelling with kids, sports gear, or musical instruments

KLM’s infant allowance is one of the better ones. If your infant is on your lap (under 2), they get a free 10 kg checked bag plus a hand bag for baby essentials (55 x 35 x 25 cm, max 10 kg). That’s in addition to your own allowance.

Pushchairs and car seats travel free. If your pram fits within 15 x 30 x 100 cm, it can come into the cabin. Otherwise it gets gate-checked. Children with their own seat get the same allowance as an adult.

For sports kit: golf bags count as a regular checked bag piece. Surfboards can replace a checked bag. But bicycles are special baggage and charged separately. Musical instruments within cabin dimensions can fly in the cabin; anything bigger needs its own seat. All special baggage must be reserved at least 48 hours before departure.

โœ‹๐Ÿผ Must-do: Bringing sports equipment or a musical instrument? Book through My Trip at least 48 hours ahead. Last-minute requests at the airport rarely go smoothly.

Common KLM baggage mistakes (and how to dodge them)

I’ve made a few of these myself.

Booking Economy Basic and expecting a cabin bag. The big one. The fare name sounds normal, and plenty of people don’t realise they’re only getting a small under-seat bag until they’re at the gate.

Ignoring the combined 12 kg weight rule. Your cabin bag and personal item together can’t exceed 12 kg. Heavy laptop plus full cabin bag? You’re over.

Not pre-booking extra bags. Airport fees are roughly double online rates. Takes 90 seconds via My Trip.

Assuming codeshare flights have the same rules. If a partner airline operates your flight, their baggage rules might apply instead.

Forgetting the US TSA rule. Flying Business out of the US? Still limited to one cabin bag plus one personal item.

๐Ÿ”น Tinker’s Tip: Grab an eSIM before you fly so you can check baggage details in My Trip from anywhere without hunting for Wi-Fi.

What to do if your bag is lost, delayed, or damaged

Don't let damaged luggage ruin your trip!
Don't let damaged luggage ruin your trip!

It happens. Not often, but it happens. Schiphol is busy and bags occasionally go astray during tight connections.

If your bag doesn’t show up, head straight to the KLM baggage desk before leaving the airport. Bring your boarding pass and baggage receipt. File a report and get a reference number. KLM will usually deliver your bag within 24โ€“48 hours. If it’s delayed more than 21 days, it’s officially lost and you can claim compensation. For damaged bags, report within 7 days.

This is where travel insurance earns its keep. Most policies cover emergency purchases if your bag is delayed and replacement value if it’s lost. Without it, you’re relying on the airline’s process, which can be slow.

If your flight was also delayed or cancelled, you might be entitled to flight compensation under EU rules.

FAQs

Can I take a cabin bag on KLM Economy Basic?

No. Economy Basic only includes a small personal item (40 x 30 x 15 cm) that goes under the seat. If you want a cabin bag, purchase the hand baggage add-on through My Trip (select Amsterdam routes, up to 4 hours before departure) or book Economy Light or higher.

It varies. KLM doesn’t always weigh bags at the gate, but they can and do, especially on full flights. The combined limit is 12 kg for Economy (18 kg for Business), and if you’re over, you could be asked to check the bag. Don’t rely on getting lucky.

KLM won’t accept it. Full stop. You’ll need to repack at the airport or ship the excess via Air France KLM Cargo. There’s no “pay extra” option above 32 kg. The hard cutoff applies to all fares and classes.

Generally, no. Pre-purchased baggage is non-refundable in most cases. Only buy what you’re confident you’ll need, and if you’re unsure, wait until you’ve packed (just book at least 24 hours ahead).

Not always. If your flight is operated by a partner airline (Delta, Air France, or another SkyTeam carrier), the operating carrier’s rules usually apply. Check your booking confirmation or My Trip for the operating airline.

My Final Take Before You Fly

The KLM baggage system isn’t complicated once you know what you’re looking at. But the fare names are designed to upsell, not clarify.

Here’s the strategy:

  1. Check your fare type in My Trip as soon as you’ve booked
  2. Weigh your bags at home the night before
  3. Pre-book any extra bags online at least 24 hours ahead
  4. Pack essentials in your small bag in case the cabin bag gets gate-checked
  5. Screenshot your allowance from My Trip, just in case
