Iceland Ring Road: An Epic Road Trip + Map ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ธ

If Iceland had a โ€œgreatest hitsโ€ album, the Ring Road would be it. This legendary loop circles the entire island, serving up a non-stop stream of jaw-dropping sights, from waterfalls that seem to tumble straight out of the clouds to black sand beaches that look like they belong on another planet. Add in steaming hot springs, glacier lagoons, dramatic fjords, and more photo ops than your phoneโ€™s memory can handle, and youโ€™ve got the ultimate road trip.

Starting and ending in Reykjavik, this 7โ€“10 day adventure takes you on a full lap of the Land of Fire and Ice, with just enough time to linger in the spots that steal your heart. Iceland is still my favourite place in the world! ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Day 1 โ€“ Reykjavik (0โ€“1 hour driving)

Kick things off in Icelandโ€™s quirky capital. Wander around colourful streets, check out Hallgrรญmskirkja church, browse the harbour for street food, and maybe grab a soak at Sky Lagoon to get into full holiday mode.

Overnight: Reykjavik

Day 2 โ€“ Golden Circle (Thingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss) (~3 hours driving)

Yes, itโ€™s touristyโ€ฆ but for good reason. Stand between two tectonic plates at Thingvellir, watch Strokkur geyser erupt every few minutes, and finish with the mighty Gullfoss waterfall roaring in your face.
Overnight: Selfoss/Hella area

Day 3 โ€“ South Coast (Seljalandsfoss, Skรณgafoss, Reynisfjara) (~3 hours driving)

The road east is just one showstopper after another. Walk behind Seljalandsfoss, climb the stairs at Skรณgafoss for epic views, and feel tiny on Reynisfjaraโ€™s black sand beach (just watch those sneaky waves).

Overnight: Vik

Day 4 โ€“ Skaftafell & Jรถkulsรกrlรณn (~4 hours driving)

Hike a glacier tongue at Skaftafell National Park or wander easy trails to glacier viewpoints. Then head to Jรถkulsรกrlรณn lagoon to watch icebergs float lazily by before drifting over to the Diamond Beach glittering with ice chunks.

Overnight: Hรถfn (donโ€™t miss the lobster soup here)

Day 5 โ€“ East Fjords (~4 hours driving)

Take the slower coastal route and youโ€™ll be rewarded with quiet fishing villages, zig-zag mountain roads, and maybe even reindeer. Itโ€™s Iceland without the crowds.

Overnight: Egilsstaรฐir or Seyรฐisfjรถrรฐur (the prettiest little town youโ€™ll see all trip)

Day 6 โ€“ North Iceland (Dettifoss, Lake Mรฝvatn) (~3 hours driving)

Feel the power at Dettifoss (Europeโ€™s most powerful waterfall), then explore the volcanic playground of Mรฝvatn โ€” think bubbling mud pools, lava fields, and the heavenly Mรฝvatn Nature Baths.

Overnight: Mรฝvatn area or Hรบsavรญk (whale watching central)

Day 7 โ€“ Akureyri & Trollaskagi Peninsula (~3 hours driving)

Stroll the cute streets of Akureyri (Icelandโ€™s โ€œsecond cityโ€), then head along the Trollaskagi Peninsula for dramatic sea cliffs, turf houses, and fjord views youโ€™ll want to frame.

Overnight: Akureyri or Siglufjรถrรฐur

Day 8 โ€“ West Iceland (Hraunfossar & Borgarfjรถrรฐur) (~4 hours driving)

Swing by Hraunfossar, where dozens of mini waterfalls pour out of a lava field, and Barnafoss, a wild, foaming rapid. This areaโ€™s also big on hot springs if you fancy another dip.

Overnight: Borgarnes area

Day 9 โ€“ Snรฆfellsnes Peninsula (Optional Detour)ย (~4 hours driving)

If youโ€™ve got an extra day, add this โ€œIceland in Miniatureโ€ to your trip. Youโ€™ll get a volcano, glacier, sea stacks, tiny fishing villages, and more puffin-spotting opportunities.

Day 10 โ€“ Back to Reykjavik (0โ€“1 hour driving)

Wrap it up with a final wander through Reykjavikโ€™s shops, a coffee in one of its artsy cafรฉs, or a last Blue Lagoon soak before your flight.

๐Ÿš— Total Distance: Around 820 miles (1,320 km) without detours
๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ Recommended Time: 7โ€“10 days, depending on how much hiking, soaking, and photo-snapping you do.
