Why Bulgaria, Why Now

Sofia. Roman ruins sitting next to metro stations, with Vitosha mountain on the doorstep. Population of Bulgaria: around 6.4 million.
Language
Bulgarian, written in Cyrillic. Menus and transport signs are often bilingual in cities. "Zdravey" for hi, "blagodarya" for thank you. English is common in tourist areas.
Currency
The Euro (EUR), adopted 1 January 2026. If you see prices still quoted in Bulgarian Lev, the fixed rate was 1.95583 BGN to €1. Check the latest rates on XE before you go.
Cards & ATMs
Cards are widely accepted in Sofia, Plovdiv, and coastal resorts. Carry some cash for smaller towns, markets, and family-run guesthouses.
Plugs
Type C and F, 230 V, same as most of mainland Europe. Coming from the UK or US? Grab a universal adapter and stop thinking about it.
Safety
Very safe. Violent crime against tourists is rare, and the Global Peace Index ranks Bulgaria 28th globally. Petty theft in crowds is the main risk. Emergency number is 112.
A Fact To Impress Locals
Bulgaria gave the world the Cyrillic alphabet, developed there in the 9th century. It's now used by over 250 million people across Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Bulgarians are rightly proud of it.
Never Ever
Don't trust the head nod. In Bulgaria, nodding up and down typically means "no," and shaking side to side means "yes." It trips up every single first-timer, guaranteed.

Tips for Saving Money in Bulgaria
Ten ways to stretch a budget that's already going far.
Tap water is potable and regularly monitored in Sofia and other major cities. Bring a reusable bottle and skip buying it.
Grill houses and mehanas away from tourist squares serve the same food at half the price. Follow the office-lunch crowd.
Plovdiv, Nessebar, and Veliko Tarnovo are all compact and walkable. You'll rarely need transport within them.
A daily transport pass costs around €2 / £1.75 / $2.20 and covers metro, tram, and bus. Cheaper than a couple of single tickets.
Sofia to Plovdiv is cheaper and just as pleasant by train as by bus, even if it takes a little longer.
Late spring or September brings lower accommodation prices, thinner crowds, and weather that's still genuinely good.
They're everywhere outside the big cities, cheaper than hotels, and usually come with genuinely great home cooking.
Bansko and Borovets offer proper snow and lift access for a fraction of Western European ski resort prices.
Cards work fine in cities and resorts, but smaller towns, markets, and rural guesthouses often prefer cash.
Plovdiv's Old Town, Sofia's parks, the Nessebar and Sozopol peninsulas, and hiking in the Rila and Rhodope mountains cost nothing.

Buses tend to beat trains for speed here, and everything is cheap by Western European standards. Here's how to get between places.
Flights In
Sofia is the main international hub. Varna and Burgas get seasonal charter and budget flights direct to the Black Sea coast in summer.

Intercity Buses

Which Is Right For You?
Walk, or use the metro in Sofia.
Intercity buses. Usually faster than the train.
Rent a car. Public transport thins out fast.
Fly direct into Varna or Burgas for the coast.
Quick Tips
Bulgaria's motorway toll sticker is bought online or at the border. Sort it before you set off, not once you're already driving.
Sofia's airport metro station is at Terminal 2, and it's the fastest, cheapest way into the city centre.
If a taxi driver says the meter's broken, get a different taxi. It's the most common tourist scam in the country.
Nods and shakes mean the opposite of what you'd expect. Use "da" and "ne" out loud to avoid genuine confusion.
