Reutte Travel Guide

Medieval fortresses, crystal-clear lakes and a world-record hanging bridge make the Reutte Nature Park region a fusion of the past and present. Dominating the landscape is the Lech river with its untamed landscape.

Overview

The lords and ladies may have long left the Ehrenberg, but these medieval castle ruins high above Reutte still bear witness to the region’s rich history. The ruins can be accessed via a 406-metre-long hanging bridge called Highline 179, spanning a deep ravine 114 metres below – don’t look down!

On hot days there are plenty of lakes where visitors can cool off. The mighty Plansee, for example, has crystal-clear water and is up to 77 metres deep in places. There are even sightseeing ships operating on it. The Lech river too turbulent for any such things, but those who wish to learn more about the region’s lifeline can do so at the exhibition “Der letzte Wilde” showcasing the flora, fauna and geology of this major river.

Highline 179

Reutte town

Reutte is twenty minutes south of Füssen, Germany and less than an hour west of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The town of Reutte boasts nothing exceptional other than it is the heart of the Nature Park or Ausserfern Region of Tirol. Reutte sits in a small alpine valley between the Lechtal and Allgäu Alps, and the Leche River basin carves through its once predominately agricultural center.

Unlike many of its alpine cousins who have sold out to wealthy tourists in search of high-dollar ski resorts, Reutte restricts property ownership exclusively to year-round residents. That is why in its valleys you will still hear the comforting sound of distant cowbells on summer evenings and find authentic chapels and crucifixes on the corners of old pasture lanes.
