ToggleIf you’re anything like me, your heart starts beating a little faster at the very mention of an ‘adventure’. You know the feeling, right? But, we’ve all been there, you finally make it to that so-called “hidden gem,” and you’re met with endless selfie sticks. The magic kind of vanishes, right?
I’ve spent years literally scouring maps and falling down internet rabbit holes looking for places that feel real. I’m totally obsessed with finding spots where the only sound is the wind, not a symphony of tour guide microphones. If you’re vigorously nodding your head right now, then this one’s for you. We don’t gatekeep around here. Let’s get into the good stuff.
Why You'll Actually Love These Places
It’s simple, really. These spots aren’t just pretty pictures, no! They have a soul. You get the real, unfiltered version of a country, not the polished up for Instagram one. We’re talking about swapping queues for wide-open trails and tacky keychains for a real conversation with a local. It’s travel that feels less like ticking off a list and more like making a genuine connection. This is what makes me bloody love travel!
Hike the Accursed Mountains of Albania 🏔️
Seriously, put the Swiss Alps on the back burner for a second and hear me out. Hidden away in northern Albania are the Accursed Mountains, a name that sounds intense, I know, but the scenery is pure magic. This is one of Europe’s last truly wild corners, where life moves at a different pace and the hiking is next-level. It’s the kind of place where hospitality is everything, and the trails belong to you.
Your Unfiltered Adventure:
Theth to Valbona Hike: This isn’t just a walk, it’s a full-on epic. A day-long trek that serves up some of the most dramatic mountain scenes you’ll ever witness.
The Blue Eye of Theth: A ridiculously blue natural spring. Be brave, jump in! It’s an ice-cold shock to the system, but you’ll feel so alive afterwards.
Live Like a Local: Staying in the family-run guesthouses (kullas) is the best part. The home-cooked food is incredible, and you get a real sense of life in the mountains.
🔹 Tinker’s Tip: A mistake I nearly made! Bring cash! And more than you think you need. There are zero ATMs in the villages of Theth and Valbona. Zero
💡 Did You Know?: The name “Accursed Mountains” comes from an old folk tale. Legend says a mother cursed the mountains in grief after her sons were tricked by a mountain fairy, leading them to kill each other.

Kayak the Insanely Green Soča River in Slovenia
Slovenia feels like it was ripped from a storybook, and the Soča Valley is where all the adventures happen. I’m not kidding when I say the river is a mind-bending shade of emerald, it almost doesn’t look real. While everyone is crowding around Lake Bled, you could be here, in a real-life playground for grown-ups.
You’re going to love this one. The options are endless:
Whitewater Fun: Whether you’re a first-timer or a pro, you can get on this river. Go rafting with a group or grab a kayak for a solo mission.
Canyoning Chaos: Okay, canyoning is my absolute obsession. Ready to feel like a kid again? You’ll be zipping down natural rock slides and leaping into crystal-clear pools.
Waterfall Hunting: The whole valley is hiding incredible waterfalls. The hike to Kozjak is a must; it’s tucked away inside a mossy cave chamber and feels like you’ve stumbled into another world.
🔹 Pro Tip: Book your adventure sports (rafting, canyoning) at least a few days in advance in summer. The valley never feels crowded, but the best tour operators with the best gear do get booked up!
💡 Did You Know? The jaw-dropping turquoise water of the Soča River was used as a filming location for the movie The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian!

Go Full-On Explorer Mode in the Azores, Portugal 🐋
Picture this: Jurassic Park meets the Irish coast, but with better weather. That’s the Azores, Portugal. This bunch of volcanic islands is way out in the Atlantic, a semi-tropical dream of lush green hills, roads lined with blue hydrangeas, and steamy natural hot springs. Getting here takes a little more effort, which is brilliant because it keeps the massive crowds away.
Adventures You Won’t Forget:
Meet the Giants of the Deep: The Azores are a world-class spot for whale and dolphin watching. There are no words for the feeling of seeing a majestic sperm whale surface just metres from your boat.
Hike into a Volcano: On the main island, São Miguel, you can hike the rim of the Sete Cidades crater. The view down to the blue and green lakes is unreal.
A Natural Spa Day: Your tired hiking muscles will thank you for this, I promise. Go for a soak in the warm, iron-rich waters of Terra Nostra Park. Total bliss.
🔹 Travel Tinker’s Tip: Pack for all four seasons in one day. Seriously. The weather is famously unpredictable. Even on a sunny day, always take a rain jacket with you when you leave your accommodation.
💡 Did You Know? The Azores are home to the only commercial tea plantations in Europe! You can visit the Gorreana Tea Plantation to walk through the fields and taste their organic tea for free.

Embrace the Mood in the Faroe Islands
Alright, this one’s for the traveller who loves a bit of mood and drama. The Faroe Islands are a whole other level of wild. Eighteen jagged islands stabbing out of the North Atlantic, defined by sheer cliffs that plunge into a churning ocean, and home to way more puffins than people. The weather here isn’t just weather, it’s a character in your story, always changing, always dramatic, always beautiful.
Your Faroese Bucket List:
The “Floating Lake” Hike: You’ve probably seen the picture of Sørvágsvatn lake, which looks like it’s hanging impossibly high above the sea. Seeing it in person will mess with your head in the best way possible.
Puffin Paradise on Mykines: In summer, take the little ferry over to Mykines island and just wander. You’ll be sharing the path with thousands of adorable puffins. It’s cuteness overload.
That Waterfall into the Ocean: The Múlafossur waterfall is the stuff of legends, tipping right off a cliff’s edge into the ocean. It’s even more breathtaking in real life.
🔹 Tinker’s Tip: Renting a car is essential, and so is getting a pass for the sub-sea tunnels! These incredible engineering feats connect the main islands and will save you hours compared to waiting for ferries.
💡 Did You Know? You’ll be outnumbered by fluffy, four-legged locals. The name Faroe Islands is believed to mean “Sheep Islands,” and they literally have the right of way on the roads!

Track Bears in Romania's Carpathian Mountains 🐻
Let’s talk about Romania, possibly my favourite place in Eastern Europe and no, not just Dracula. Transylvania is home to one of Europe’s last true wildernesses: the Carpathian Mountains. Think vast, ancient forests, fairytale-like Saxon villages, and a healthy population of brown bears, wolves, and lynx. This is where you go for a deep-woods adventure that feels a million miles from anywhere.
Carpathian Must-Dos:
Ethical Bear Watching: Find a responsible tour operator who works with rangers. They’ll take you to a special hide deep in the forest. Watching a wild bear silently appear from the trees at dusk is just… wow.
Hike Piatra Craiului National Park: This place has some of Romania’s best, most rewarding trails. The sharp limestone ridges and views are phenomenal.
Bike Through History: Hop on a bike and pedal between colourful Saxon villages like Viscri and Biertan. It’s the perfect way to explore.
🔹 Tinker’s Pro Tip: When you’re in a bear hide, silence is golden. No loud talking, no flash photography, and turn your phone completely off. Your patience and respect will seriously increase your chances of a magical sighting.
💡 Did You Know? The Carpathian Mountains contain one of the largest single areas of undisturbed forest in Europe and are home to over 60% of the entire European brown bear population!

Chase the Midnight Sun in Finnish Lapland
Everyone pictures Lapland covered in snow with Santa’s sleigh, right? Well, I’m going to let you in on a little secret: summer in Lapland is incredible. From June to July, the sun literally doesn’t set. That means 24 hours of daylight for adventuring! The snowy landscape becomes a green wilderness of forests and countless lakes, and there’s barely anyone around.
Seriously, 24 hours of daylight? It’s a game-changer for adventurers:
Hike at Midnight: Imagine climbing a small mountain (a ‘fell’) at 1 AM and watching the sun kiss the horizon before bouncing right back up. It’s completely surreal.
Paddle in Golden Light: Kayaking on a mirror-still lake at 2 AM with the world bathed in a soft golden glow. It’s so quiet you can almost hear your own heartbeat.
Go Full Finn: Forage for berries, then hit a traditional Finnish sauna, followed by a brave plunge into a cool lake. It’s the perfect end to a perfect, endless day.
🔹 Tinkers Tip: I’m not going to lie to you, summer in Lapland means mosquitoes. They can be intense. A strong insect repellent is not a recommendation; it’s a necessity. Don’t leave home without it.
💡 Did You Know? Finland has a concept called “Everyman’s Right” (Jokamiehen oikeudet), which means you are free to roam the countryside, forage for berries, and camp almost anywhere for a night, as long as you’re respectful.

Conquer the Towers of Svaneti, Georgia
Okay, if you’re looking for the final boss of European adventure, this is it. The Svaneti region in Georgia’s mighty Caucasus Mountains feels like a lost world. You’ll see ancient stone towers guarding valleys set against a backdrop of giant, snowy peaks. This is the ultimate destination to love adventure but not tourists; a trip here feels like a true expedition.
An Unforgettable Journey:
The Mestia to Ushguli Trek: This is a world-famous, 4-day hike for a reason. You walk from one ancient village to the next, with jaw-dropping views the entire way. It will change you. No exaggeration.
Discover Ushguli: This collection of villages is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Europe’s highest inhabited places. It feels like you’ve walked straight into the history books.
Soak Up Svan Culture: The local Svan people have their own language and a fascinating, fierce history. Pop into a museum in Mestia to understand the soul of this incredible land.
🔹 Tinkers Tip: I spent ages stressing about logistics for my first trip here, here’s the trick. For the Mestia-Ushguli trek, book your guesthouses a few weeks in advance. They are small, family-run spots that fill up fast in summer!
💡 Did You Know? Those ancient stone towers (koshkebi) weren’t just for defence against foreign invaders. They were also used as family strongholds during local blood feuds, where families would sometimes hide inside for years.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What were When’s the best time to go?the original Seven Ancient Wonders of the World? Feels like pub quiz stuff!
You asked, so here it is! For most of these mountain-heavy spots (Albania, Slovenia, Romania, Georgia, Finland, Faroes), you want to aim for late spring to early autumn (roughly June to September). That’s when the trails are snow-free and the sun is on your side. For the Azores, spring and autumn are gorgeous and even quieter.
Is it cool to go solo?
100% yes! These places are very safe for solo travellers. Your biggest concern is nature itself, not people. If you’re heading out on a big hike, just be smart: tell someone your plan. And for stuff like canyoning, it’s always smarter (and more fun) to go with a guided group unless you’re a seasoned expert.
How do I even get to these places?
That’s half the adventure! Here’s a quick guide:
Albania/Georgia: Fly into the capital (Tirana/Tbilisi) and grab a local bus or shared taxi (a marshrutka in Georgia). It’s an experience in itself!
Azores/Faroe Islands: You’ll need to fly, usually connecting through Portugal or Denmark.
Slovenia/Romania: Here’s what we found worked best: fly into a major city (Ljubljana/Bucharest) and rent a car. The freedom is totally worth it.
What should I pack? Like, really?
Okay, here’s my go-to kit. Layers, layers, and good waterproofs. The weather in these places can throw a tantrum at any moment. These items are non-negotiable for me:
Great hiking boots that you’ve already broken in. Please don’t hike in new boots!
A jacket that’s actually waterproof and windproof.
Warm mid-layers like a fleece or a puffy jacket.
A reusable water bottle. Stay hydrated!
A power bank. You won’t always find a plug when you need one.
Are they going to destroy my bank account?
You’re going to love this answer: NO! You don’t need a big budget for this. Compared to places like Paris or London, most of these spots are a dream. The Balkans (Albania) and Eastern Europe (Romania, Georgia) are incredibly affordable. The Azores are also great value. The only one that’ll pinch your wallet is the Faroe Islands; think standard Nordic prices.
