Amsterdam
The month of April is in the shoulder season of the tourist industry. The low visitor season in Amsterdam is a rare opportunity that should be seized.
In April, Amsterdam is awash in the vibrant colours of spring. This city has its own special allure, and the many colours of the tulips only serve to accentuate that. The locals emerge from their homes as the sun begins to shine. Because of this, April is a wonderful month to visit Amsterdam.
With April’s extra daylight hours, you can spend more time seeing Amsterdam’s many must-see attractions. April is also a very joyous month in the metropolis. Crete, Greece
Crete is the warmest and most southern of the Greek islands. Outside of the Easter school break, the month of April is a wonderful shoulder season since the weather is pleasant while still warming up before the searing height of summer. Indulge in relaxing days on popular beaches, such as the normally crowded, pink-hued Elafonisi, which will be less crowded now.
You can find a more authentic, resort-free Creta if you travel to the island’s southernmost regions. Mountain roads wind through breathtaking scenery and sleepy towns, where local fare including meat, cheese, and wine is served at the tavernas. After dinner, you can bet on a couple rounds of house raki on the house. It’s probably a good idea to spend the night.
Jordan
It’s all there in Jordan. Curious about the world’s oldest monuments? Check out Petra, a city carved out of rock that has been inhabited for over 2,000 years, and the Crusader fortress in Karak. Urban attractions? Check out Amman’s souks or ancient Jerash, both of which were once inhabited by the Romans. Incredible scenery? Set up camp in Wadi Rum, a desert landscape that seems to have been plucked straight from another planet. Not only that, but this time of year in particular, Jordan may also be shockingly lush with vegetation.
There is little precipitation and pleasant temperatures of 20–23 degrees Celsius (68–73 degrees Fahrenheit) in April. The central valleys are green from winter rains, and wildflowers bloom across the region. In particular, strawberry trees and rock roses blossom in abundance in Ajloun Forest, while oleander and birds sing in the oasis towns of Dana. It doesn’t take much effort to see a lot of Petra, either.
Paris, France
Nobody could possibly dislike Paris in the springtime. Alternatively, Paris is a terrific idea year-round, as Audrey Hepburn once put it. But now is the time to go, as the city is warming up and flowers are blooming on the trees in the Tuileries. When we may take a long, golden-evening stroll along the Seine, hand-in-hand with someone else who also loves Paris in the spring, and join the young Parisians who come out blinking into the spring sunshine, shrugging off their nice coats to reveal a new-season Breton stripe. Lisbon, Portugal
Beautiful Lisbon has everything you need for a perfect weekend getaway (or more). The perfect amount of decaying, poster-paint-bright historic façade; a thriving social, cuisine, arts, and design culture; fantastic tiny spots to eat and drink; intriguing old corners and markets to wander about. Lisbon is home to both historic palaces and trendy rooftop bars with swimming pools. And it’s right by the water!
All of this is available at a price that is stupidly, deliciously low. You may visit Lisbon at any time of the year, but April is particularly lovely since the days are long and sunny and the city’s traditional cobblestone streets are just starting to get comfortable.
Rome, Italy
Many History buffs might prefer to visit Rome on its birthday. The Eternal City was founded on 21 April 753 BCE, and every year it commemorates with events, light shows and truck-loads of fireworks. April and May are lovely months to visit regardless of the festivities. Rome is best explored during the spring when temperatures are cooler (15-20°C; 59-68°F) than they are in the winter or summer. It’s also less busy (and a little cheaper), because seasonal attractions are open. In addition, dishes featuring spring vegetables like artichokes and asparagus are abundant on menus right now. Wairarapa, New Zealand
Raise a glass in the style of a real Wellingtonian during grape harvest, when the vines paint the hillsides an autumnal colour as they wait to be picked. Located barely an hour’s drive northeast of New Zealand’s capital, the Wairarapa Wine Region boasts a climate similar to Burgundy with a wild, rustic, unexplored vibe. Those interested in New Zealand’s wine should head to the historic town of Martinborough. Here in these parts, on vineyards owned by loving families, you can get pinot noir of the highest quality. There is a restaurant on the premises at Luna; for something a little more personal, try Nga Waka or Schubert. Expect to sample wines with beers from the region’s craft breweries and chow down on platters of world-class cheeses on gourmet tours and food-wine matching experiences that combine visits to some of the region’s twenty-odd wineries. You can also go on a self-guided bike tour around the vineyards; the wineries in the area are all in close proximity to one another.
Barcelona
Barcelona is one of the top European holiday destinations any time of the year. It’s significantly less busy than during the peak summer tourist season, and the weather is just as nice as the rest of the year in the spring. It’s a great base from which to explore the city, and it maintains that exciting, authentic Barcelona vibe that I adore.
Barcelona’s most recognisable features are its buildings, works of art, restaurants, and vibrant nightlife. You’ll fall in love with every aspect of Spanish life and culture. Reykjavik, Iceland
The aurora borealis. Do I even need to say more? The capital city of Iceland, Reykjavik, is surrounded by some of the world’s most breathtakingly spectacular landscapes, all of which have been frozen in time.
In April, the dark days of winter finally give way to the longer, sunnier days of spring. Numerous species of marine life can be observed, including humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins, porpoises, and sperm whales.
Even though it’s considerably warmer, you still have an excellent chance of seeing the Northern Lights. Even if you’re not so lucky, there’s still much to see and do in Reykjavik and the rest of this alien-looking nation.

The Nile, Egypt
The events of the last few years, such as the centenary of the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb, the opening of the massive Grand Egypt Museum in Giza, and Kenneth Branagh’s remake of Death on the Nile, have brought Egyptomania back into fashion like it was the 1920s. In April, the weather is hot and sunny but not yet oppressive in the south, making it the last month to take a cruise down the world’s longest river from Cairo to Luxor and the Valley of the Kings, all the way to Aswan.
