TAP Air Portugal Baggage Allowance: Carry-On, Checked Bags & Fees Explained

Estimated reading time: 11 mins

Flying TAP Air Portugal? Good choice. They’re one of the best-connected airlines into Lisbon and Porto, with solid routes into Brazil, Africa, and across Europe. But their baggage rules aren’t as straightforward as you’d hope, and the fare structure catches people out.

The Discount fare is the biggest culprit. People book it expecting a cabin bag and checked suitcase, then get hit with fees at the gate. I’ve almost been that person.

This guide covers exactly what you can bring on each TAP fare, what the fees look like, and the simplest ways to keep more money in your pocket.

TAP Air Portugal Baggage Allowance: Quick Facts at a Glance

✅ Personal item included on all fares (40 × 30 × 15 cm, max 2 kg)

✅ Cabin bag (55 × 40 × 20 cm, 8 kg) included from Basic fare upwards

✅ Discount fare: personal item only, no cabin bag, no checked bag

✅ Classic fare includes 1 × 23 kg checked bag; Plus gets you 2

✅ Executive class: 2 × 32 kg checked bags included

✅ Prepaying for bags online is significantly cheaper than paying at the airport

✅ TAP Miles&Go Gold and Star Alliance Gold members get extra baggage perks

✅ Sports equipment and musical instruments have separate policies and fees

✅ Biggest quick win: add your bags online before check-in closes

✅ Biggest mistake: assuming Discount fare includes a cabin bag (it doesn’t)

✅ This guide is for: anyone flying TAP who wants to dodge surprise baggage fees

🔹 Tinker’s Tip: Screenshot your booking confirmation the night before. If there’s any confusion at the gate about what bags your fare includes, having proof on your phone saves you a world of stress.

Baggage Allowance Quick Q&As

What is TAP Air Portugal’s carry-on baggage allowance? All fares include a personal item (40 × 30 × 15 cm, 2 kg). From Basic upwards, you also get a cabin bag (55 × 40 × 20 cm, 8 kg).

How much does it cost to add a checked bag on TAP? It depends on the route, but prepaying online typically costs between €25 and €50 for short-haul and €45 to €80 for long-haul. Paying at the airport can cost 30 to 50% more.

Can I bring a personal item and a cabin bag on a Discount fare? No. The Discount fare only includes a small personal item. You’ll need to upgrade your fare or pay to add a cabin bag separately.

How early should I prepay for checked bags to get the best price? As early as possible. TAP’s online prices are cheapest when added at booking. Prices tend to increase as your departure date gets closer, and they’re highest at the airport.

What happens if my bag is overweight at the airport? You’ll pay an excess fee, which can be around €50 to 75 per bag depending on the route. It’s always cheaper to weigh your bags at home and stay under the limit.

Does TAP allow musical instruments as carry-on? Small instruments within cabin bag dimensions can go in the overhead bin. Larger instruments may need a purchased seat, so contact TAP in advance.

What’s the easiest way to avoid TAP baggage fees? Know what your fare includes before you pack, add bags online at booking, and weigh everything the night before. Most fees come from people who just didn’t check.

👉 Good to know: TAP’s app lets you manage your bags right from your phone. It’s worth downloading before your trip, and an eSIM means you’ll have data at the airport to make last-minute changes without hunting for Wi-Fi.

Understanding the TAP Air Portugal Baggage Allowance by Fare Type

TAP Air Portugal Bagagge Allowance made simple
TAP Air Portugal Bagagge Allowance made simple

TAP runs five main fare types, and understanding the TAP Air Portugal baggage allowance for each one is honestly half the battle. Get this right and everything else falls into place.

The Discount fare is the stripped-back option. You get a personal item and that’s it. No cabin bag. No checked bag. Nothing. It’s the cheapest ticket, but it’s only truly cheap if you’re travelling light with just a small backpack or handbag.

Basic bumps you up to a personal item plus a cabin bag. Still no checked bag though, which trips people up. Classic is where most regular travellers find their sweet spot, because it adds a 23 kg checked bag into the mix. Plus gives you two checked bags at 23 kg each, and Executive (TAP’s business class) gets you two checked bags at 32 kg each, along with all the other premium perks.

One thing I’ve noticed is that the difference between Basic and Classic is often only €20 to 40 on European routes. If you were going to pay for a checked bag anyway, upgrading the fare often works out the same price or cheaper. Worth doing the maths before you click.

💡 Fact: TAP is a Star Alliance member, so baggage rules interact with partner tickets. If you booked through a codeshare, check which airline’s policy actually applies.

Carry-On Rules: Personal Item and Cabin Bag

Right, let’s talk cabin luggage. Every TAP passenger gets a personal item. Think handbag, small backpack, or laptop bag. The limit is 40 × 30 × 15 cm and 2 kg. That 2 kg limit is tighter than most airlines, so be mindful.

From the Basic fare upwards, you also get a cabin bag at 55 × 40 × 20 cm and 8 kg. Both items need to fit either under the seat in front or in the overhead bin.

How strict are they? It varies. I’ve flown TAP where nobody blinked at my bag. Other times, they’ve had sizing frames at the gate checking everything. Lisbon hub flights tend to be busier, and that’s when enforcement picks up. If your bag is borderline, it’s probably going to get flagged on the one day you can’t afford the hassle.

🔹 Tinker’s Tip: A soft-sided bag that squishes into the sizer frame is your best friend on TAP. Rigid spinners that are technically 56 cm won’t get the benefit of the doubt. Been there.

Checked Baggage Allowance: What Each Fare Includes

Checked bag rules on TAP come down to your fare type and your route. On short-haul European flights, the allowances are as listed above. On long-haul routes (think Lisbon to São Paulo, or Porto to Newark), some fares may come with slightly different inclusions.

The standard weight is 23 kg for economy fares and 32 kg for Executive. Each bag also needs to stay within 158 cm total dimensions (length + width + height). Go over on weight, you’re looking at a fee. Go over on dimensions, and it’s a separate oversized charge.

For families, infant tickets (under 2 years) typically include one checked bag at 10 kg, plus a pushchair or car seat. Children with their own seat get the same allowance as the adult fare.

✋🏼 Must-do: Weigh your bags at home. Every single time. A cheap luggage scale costs less than a single overweight fee, and it pays for itself on the first trip.

How Much Are TAP's Extra Baggage Fees?

Here’s where it gets expensive if you’re not careful. TAP’s baggage fees vary by route, timing, and where you pay. The golden rule: online is always cheaper.

An extra checked bag online might cost €30 to 50 on a European route, but at the airport counter that jumps to €50 to 80. Overweight bags (between 23 and 32 kg) are in the €50 to 75 range. And oversized bags have their own separate charge, so a heavy and oversized bag could hit you with two fees. If your bag is over 32 kg, TAP may refuse it entirely.

👉 Good to know: TAP sometimes runs promotions that include free checked bags on certain routes or booking periods. Always worth checking the TAP site or app when booking to see if any deals are live.

How to Add Bags Online and Save Money

This is one of the easiest travel wins going. Add your bags through TAP’s website or app as early as possible, ideally when you book.

Log into your booking (or the app), go to “Manage Booking”, find the baggage section, select what you need, and pay. Done. You’ll get a confirmation email and it shows on your boarding pass.

Prices are lowest when added at booking and creep up as departure approaches. Once online check-in opens (usually 36 hours before), prices may still be available but higher. At the airport, you’re paying the most. If you’re at the airport and realise you need to add a bag, the TAP app can sometimes still offer online pricing, and a local eSIM is a lifesaver if you don’t have roaming.

🔹 Tinker’s Tip: Set a phone reminder a week before your flight to review baggage. Gives you time to add bags at the lower online price before those “oh wait, I’m bringing gifts back” moments get expensive.

TAP Miles&Go and Star Alliance Perks

If you fly TAP regularly, their Miles&Go loyalty programme is free and worth signing up for. The real baggage perks kick in at Silver and Gold status.

Silver members get priority boarding and an extra cabin bag allowance. Gold members (equivalent to Star Alliance Gold) get extra checked baggage, lounge access, and priority baggage handling. Your bags come out first on the carousel, which matters more than you’d think when connecting in Lisbon.

Because TAP is part of the Star Alliance, Gold status from another carrier (United, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines) gives you similar perks on TAP. That extra checked bag alone can be worth €50 to 80 per flight.

💡 Fact: Star Alliance Gold members flying TAP in economy still get an extra checked bag, even on the Basic fare. That effectively turns a Basic fare into a Classic fare for baggage purposes, which is a solid hack if you’ve got status.

Sports Equipment, Musical Instruments and Special Items

Travelling with non-standard items on TAP? Don’t guess on this one.

Sports equipment like golf bags, surfboards, and ski gear can be checked as your included baggage (within weight) or as an additional item for an extra fee. Golf bags tend to count as a checked bag. Surfboards and bikes usually attract a flat fee that varies by route.

Musical instruments that fit cabin bag dimensions can come on board. Larger ones like a cello need a purchased seat. Contact TAP in advance. Don’t show up with a double bass and hope for the best.

Pushchairs, car seats, and mobility aids are carried free in addition to your normal allowance. Pushchairs can usually be gate-checked right up to the aircraft door.

What Happens If Your Bag Is Lost, Delayed, or Damaged

Waiting for a piece of luggage at the airport baggage reclaim!
Waiting for a piece of luggage at the airport baggage reclaim!

Nobody wants to think about this, but it happens. Knowing the process in advance makes a big difference.

If your bag doesn’t appear on the carousel, head straight to TAP’s baggage desk in arrivals. They’ll file a Property Irregularity Report (PIR), which you need for any claim. You have 21 days to report a delayed bag and 7 days for damage.

TAP’s liability under the Montreal Convention caps at roughly €1,400 (around £1,200 / $1,540) per passenger. That’s the cap, not the guarantee. This is where travel insurance becomes more than a nice-to-have. A solid policy covers essentials while you wait and fills the gap if TAP’s payout falls short.

If your flight was significantly delayed or disrupted too, you may be entitled to separate flight compensation under EU261. That’s a different claim from baggage.

✋🏼 Must-do: File your PIR at the airport before you leave. Once you walk out of arrivals without reporting it, the process gets significantly harder. Take photos of your damaged bag at the carousel too.

Common Mistakes That Cost You Money

I’ve watched enough people scramble at TAP check-in desks to know the patterns.

Booking the Discount fare and expecting a cabin bag. Most common mistake by far. People see the cheap price, assume it’s a normal economy ticket, then find out at the gate they only get a personal item.

Not prepaying for bags online. We’re talking 30 to 50% more at the airport in some cases. No upside to waiting.

Packing right up to the limit. If your bag is 22.8 kg and the limit is 23 kg, you’re one souvenir away from a fee. I aim for 20 to 21 kg and keep a luggage scale handy.

Ignoring the cabin bag weight limit. TAP sometimes weighs them. 8 kg isn’t much when you’ve got a laptop, book, water bottle, and snacks in there.

Not checking codeshare rules. If you booked through a partner airline, the baggage policy might follow the marketing carrier, not TAP. Always confirm.

🔹 Tinker’s Tip: Before every TAP flight, I do a quick “worst case” check. What’s the most it’d cost me if something goes wrong with my bags? If the answer stings, I prepay online and call it done.

Night-Before Packing Checklist for TAP Flights

Don’t leave this until the morning. The night before gives you time to actually fix problems.

If you’re arriving into Lisbon or Porto with heavy luggage, pre-booking an airport transfer saves you wrestling bags onto public transport. Lisbon airport’s metro escalators aren’t exactly luggage-friendly.

FAQs

Can I take a cabin bag on a TAP Discount fare?

No. The Discount fare only includes a personal item (40 × 30 × 15 cm, max 2 kg). You’ll need to upgrade to Basic or pay to add one online. Upgrading is usually the better deal since you get more flexibility overall.

It varies. On quieter flights, nobody blinks. On busy Lisbon departures, I’ve seen sizing frames at the gate. The 8 kg weight limit is enforced less consistently than dimensions, but I wouldn’t bank on it.

Online. Always online. Savings can be 30 to 50% compared to the airport counter. The cheapest option is adding bags when you first book. Prices increase as your travel date gets closer.

Pushchairs and car seats for children travel free of charge on TAP flights, in addition to your normal baggage allowance. You can usually gate-check your pushchair, meaning you keep it until you board and collect it at the aircraft door on arrival. Car seats can be checked in at the regular desk.

TAP doesn’t support pooling baggage between passengers, even on the same booking. Each person’s allowance is individual. If one person has 23 kg and another has nothing, you can’t shift allowance across. Pack each bag within its own limit.

Wrapping Up: Before You Fly TAP

Look, TAP is a solid airline for getting into Portugal and beyond. The baggage rules aren’t complicated once you know them.

Know your fare. Prepay for extras online as early as you can. Weigh your bags the night before. And if you’re flying Discount, accept you’re trading baggage for a cheaper ticket price.
