ToggleEgyptAir’s baggage rules seem straightforward until they’re not. Two bags, 23 kg each, job done. Except the domestic vs international allowance difference nearly caught me on a connecting flight through Cairo. Then there’s the 32 kg hard cap no amount of charm will budge, a new 2026 policy change affecting Asmara flights, and codeshare surprises if a partner airline operates part of your journey. This guide covers every class, route type, fee, and workaround I know. No fluff, just the stuff that keeps your money in your pocket.
Egyptair Baggage Allowance: Quick Facts at a Glance
✅ Economy international: 2 bags, 23 kg each (some promo fares only get 1 bag)
✅ Business/First international: 2 bags, 32 kg each
✅ Economy domestic (within Egypt): 1 bag, 23 kg max
✅ Business/First domestic: 1 bag, 32 kg max
✅ Cabin bag: 8 kg, max 55 x 40 x 20 cm
✅ Hard limit: no single bag over 32 kg (gets sent as cargo, no exceptions)
✅ 2026 change: Asmara routes now limited to 1 checked piece for all classes
✅ Excess fees: $175 to $250 per extra piece at airport check-in
✅ Star Alliance Gold / EgyptAir Plus Gold: 1 bonus checked bag on top of your allowance
✅ Codeshare flights may have different rules (always check your specific booking)
✅ Biggest mistake: assuming domestic flights get the same allowance as international
🔹 Tinker’s Tip: Always check your booking confirmation email for your specific allowance. Some promo fares on international routes only include 1 bag at 23 kg instead of 2. That email is your proof at the check-in desk.
Baggage Allowance Quick Q&As
What is EgyptAir’s standard baggage allowance? On international routes, Economy gets 2 checked bags at 23 kg each. Business and First get 2 bags at 32 kg each. Max 158 cm total dimensions.
How much does EgyptAir charge for excess baggage? $175 to $250 per extra piece at check-in. Non-refundable and non-transferable.
What changed about EgyptAir’s baggage policy in 2026? From 1 January 2026, all Asmara (Eritrea) tickets are limited to one checked piece regardless of cabin class.
Can I take 2 bags on a domestic EgyptAir flight? Not in Economy. Domestic flights allow 1 bag at 23 kg. If connecting from an international EgyptAir flight on the same booking, the international allowance carries over.
Does EgyptAir give extra baggage for Star Alliance Gold members? Yes. Gold members get 1 extra checked piece on top of their class allowance, both international and domestic.
What happens if my bag is over 32 kg? It won’t be accepted. Bags over 32 kg must ship as cargo. This is an occupational safety rule the airline can’t waive.
Are EgyptAir’s cabin baggage rules different for US flights? Yes. US flights allow 1 carry-on plus 1 personal item only, due to government regulations.
👉 Good to know: The connecting flight rule saves people the most money. If your domestic leg is on the same booking as your international flight, you keep the international allowance for that segment.
Your EgyptAir Baggage Allowance at a Glance
Here’s the thing about the EgyptAir baggage allowance: it looks generous compared to a lot of European carriers. Two checked bags in Economy on international routes is solid. But the split between international and domestic catches more people than you’d think. I’ve seen it in real time at Cairo airport. Someone lands from London with two bags, connects to Luxor, and discovers their second bag needs an extra fee because they booked the domestic leg separately.

What Changed in 2026
The headline change is the Asmara route adjustment. From 1 January 2026, passengers flying to or from Asmara in Eritrea are limited to one checked bag regardless of cabin class. Business Class passengers on that route previously got two. If you’re flying Cairo to Asmara, pack lighter or expect to pay extra.
Beyond that, 2026 is a big year for EgyptAir generally. The airline is rolling out new Airbus A350-900s, going straight onto their longest routes. Los Angeles launches 23 May 2026 (3x weekly), Chicago follows 21 June. The A350s seat 30 in business class with reverse herringbone doors and 310 in economy. Standard baggage allowances apply on these new routes, but the bigger overhead bins should make cabin life easier.
- Asmara: reduced to 1 checked piece, all classes
- New LA route: 3x weekly from May 2026 (7,605 miles, EgyptAir’s longest)
- New Chicago route: 3x weekly from June 2026
- Fleet: A350-900s for long-haul, 737 MAX 8s for shorter routes
👉 Good to know: The Asmara change only affects that specific route. All other international routes keep the standard 2-piece allowance.

Checked Baggage: International vs Domestic
This is the section I wish someone had written for me before my first Cairo connection. I’d flown in from Heathrow with two bags, all fine. Then my onward flight to Hurghada was booked separately as a domestic ticket. Cue the check-in agent pointing at my second bag and quoting a fee. Lesson learned the hard way.
International routes give Economy passengers 2 bags at 23 kg each. Domestic flights within Egypt only allow 1 bag at 23 kg. But if your domestic leg is part of the same booking, the international allowance carries over. Book it all together.
One more catch: baggage through check-in is not allowed from international stations to Cairo via domestic stations (or vice versa). You’ll collect bags in Cairo and re-check for the domestic connection. Factor in at least 90 minutes between flights.
🔹 Tinker’s Tip: Flying into Cairo and connecting to Luxor, Aswan, or Sharm El Sheikh? Book the entire journey on one EgyptAir ticket. You’ll keep your 2-bag international allowance on the domestic leg and save a potential $175+ fee.

Cabin Baggage Rules and Dimensions
Economy gets 1 piece at 8 kg max, no larger than 55 x 40 x 20 cm. Business and First get 2 pieces at 8 kg each. Honestly, 8 kg is workable if you’re not trying to cram half your wardrobe in.
The US exception matters. On flights to, from, or within the US, everyone is limited to 1 carry-on plus 1 personal item (government regulation). At UK airports, dimensions shift slightly to 58 x 45 x 25 cm. And on smaller aircraft like the E170 on domestic routes, Business passengers might be asked to check their second cabin bag.
✋🏼 Must-do: Weigh your cabin bag before you leave. EgyptAir does enforce the 8 kg limit. If your carry-on is over, it gets checked against your hold allowance. On a domestic flight with only 1 checked piece, that can push you into excess fees.

Excess Baggage Fees and How to Avoid Them
Excess fees on EgyptAir range from $175 to $250 per additional piece (about £140 to £200 / €160 to €230). Payable at check-in only. Non-refundable. And bulky items in Economy get charged at 100% of the applicable adult fare, which stings.

$175 to $250 (£140 to £200) |

Best advice: arrive 90 minutes early if carrying excess. Space availability isn’t guaranteed. And grab a digital luggage scale. A £10 one has saved me way more than that over the years.
🔹 Tinker’s Tip: Consider decent travel insurance that covers baggage issues. If anything goes sideways with delayed or lost bags, you’ll want that safety net.

Star Alliance Gold and EgyptAir Plus Perks
Star Alliance Gold members and EgyptAir Plus Gold cardholders get 1 extra checked bag on top of their class allowance. That’s “2+1” on international flights and “1+1” on domestic. Genuinely useful if you pack heavy.
EgyptAir Plus runs four tiers: Blue, Silver, Gold, Platinum. Gold requires 60,000 tier miles and maps to Star Alliance Gold. The family account feature is where it gets clever. Tier miles from family members pool into one main account, so you can hit Gold faster than with most Star Alliance programmes. Silver gets a 50% discount on the first extra piece. And Gold status from another Star Alliance airline (United, Lufthansa, Turkish) transfers to EgyptAir flights too.
👉 Good to know: EgyptAir Plus Gold also gives you 30% bonus miles on EgyptAir flights, access to 1,000+ Star Alliance lounges, priority check-in, and priority baggage handling. Worth signing up at Blue level even if you only fly them a few times a year.

Student Baggage Allowance
Students with a valid student permit card for their destination can request additional checked luggage beyond the standard allowance. Weight limits stay the same (23 kg Economy, 32 kg Business). Apply through EgyptAir directly and allow a few business days for approval. It’s destination-dependent and not automatic, but worth trying if you’re relocating for a semester. The policy isn’t widely advertised, so contact their local office or call centre.
Codeshare and Partner Airline Baggage Rules
EgyptAir codeshares with around 30 carriers, and if any leg is operated by a partner airline, that carrier’s baggage rules may apply instead. The big one to watch is United Airlines. On United-operated flights, cabin baggage is 1 piece plus 1 personal item, max 19 x 31 x 53 cm. That’s smaller than EgyptAir’s standard.
Check whose aircraft you’re actually flying on, not just whose flight number is on your booking. If it says “operated by” another airline, look up their policy separately.
✋🏼 Must-do: Screenshot your baggage allowance from your booking confirmation before the airport. If there’s a dispute at check-in about codeshare rules, you’ll want evidence on your phone.

Special Items: Sports Gear, Instruments, and Prohibited Items
Small instruments (violins, flutes, trumpets, ouds) can go in the cabin. Larger ones (cellos, guitars, kanoons) go as checked baggage or need an extra seat purchase. Anything over 32 kg or 203 cm goes as cargo. Sporting equipment is generally accepted within the free allowance if it fits, larger kit counts as excess.
Things to flag: hoverboards are completely banned on all EgyptAir flights. E-cigarettes must be in carry-on, never checked. For high-value items to Spain, declaring over approximately 1,200 euros costs 0.5% of the declared value, max $5,000 per passenger.
👉 Good to know: Travelling with a large instrument? Contact EgyptAir at least 48 hours before departure. Buying an extra seat for a cello is common and much cheaper than shipping as cargo.

What to Do If Your Bags Go Missing
If your bags don’t show up, head straight to the EgyptAir baggage services desk before leaving arrivals. File a Property Irregularity Report and keep your baggage claim tag safe. For damaged bags, same process. Report before you leave the airport.
This is where having proper travel insurance matters. A good policy covers delayed, lost, and damaged baggage. If a significant flight delay contributed to the issue, flight compensation services can help figure out if you’re owed anything.

FAQs
Can I combine my baggage allowance with another passenger on EgyptAir?
EgyptAir doesn’t allow pooling of baggage allowances between passengers. Each person’s allowance is individual. The EgyptAir Plus family account pools miles for status qualification, but the extra bag perk from Gold status can’t be shared across family members on the same booking.
Does EgyptAir allow musical instruments as cabin baggage?
Small instruments (violins, flutes, trumpets, ouds) yes, within cabin size limits. Larger instruments need checked baggage or an extra seat. Anything over 32 kg or 203 cm ships as cargo. Contact EgyptAir in advance for larger items.
What is the maximum size for EgyptAir checked baggage?
158 cm total (length + width + height). Bags between 158 and 203 cm are oversized and attract a 50% surcharge. Nothing over 203 cm is accepted as checked luggage at all.
Will my international baggage allowance apply on a connecting domestic EgyptAir flight?
Yes, but only if both legs are on the same booking. If the domestic flight was booked separately, you get the domestic allowance (1 bag in Economy) and may need to pay for a second bag. This catches loads of people at Cairo.
How do I add extra baggage to my EgyptAir booking?
There’s no widely available online pre-purchase option. Contact your local EgyptAir office or call centre before flying. You can also pay at check-in ($175 to $250 per piece) but acceptance depends on space. Arrive early if you know you’ll have excess.
Wrapping Up: Before You Fly Egyptair
Flying EgyptAir with the right baggage setup comes down to a few things. Know your route type (international vs domestic makes a real difference). Weigh your bags the night before. Check your booking confirmation for the actual allowance. And if connecting through Cairo, book everything on one ticket.
If you’ve got Star Alliance Gold, use that extra bag. Students, apply for extra allowance well in advance. And Asmara travellers, it’s one bag only in 2026.
For anyone planning a wider Egypt trip, find accommodation through Booking.com and grab an eSIM so you’ve got data the moment you land. Drop a comment if you’ve been caught out by the domestic vs international difference, and check out more guides on TheTravelTinker.com. Safe travels!👇💬
