Starting in Salzburg and curling through Werfen, Berchtesgaden, and Hallstatt is the second kind – all mountains, lakes, castles and strudel breaks. One minute you’re craning your neck inside the world’s biggest ice cave (incredible), the next you’re drifting across Königssee with onion-domed chapels reflected on the water. And Hallstatt? Well, that’s the village that doesn’t need a filter.
I first did this loop with a playlist that swung wildly from Mozart to M83, stopping far too often for pastries and photo ops. The drives are short, the scenery is ridiculous, and every turn feels like you’ve wandered onto a postcard. Here’s how to do it yourself, minus the faff. 🚗✨

- Golden hour along the Salzach River

Day 2 — Salzburg → Werfen → Berchtesgaden ⛰️❄️
Drive: Salzburg to Werfen ~45 min. Werfen to Berchtesgaden ~50 min.

- Burg Hohenwerfen for a proper medieval fix and eagle demonstrations in season
- Eisriesenwelt Ice Cave (time-slotted, cool layers needed, sturdy footwear)
📍Afternoon roll to Berchtesgaden:
- Explore the pastel old town and salt heritage
- If time allows, last-boat Königssee cruise to St. Bartholomä with that iconic mirror-water scene
Overnight: Berchtesgaden or nearby Schönau am Königssee.
