The Guinness Storehouse: A Pint-Sized Adventure

A Brief History of the Black Stuff

Guinness, St. James's Street
Guinness, St. James's Street

Guinness, oh Guinness! This iconic stout has been painting tongues black since 1759. Founded by Arthur Guinness at St. James’s Gate Brewery, it’s become more than just a drink, it’s a symbol of Ireland itself. Did you know that Arthur was so confident in his brew that he signed a 9,000-year lease on the brewery, for just £45? Now that’s what I call planning ahead!

How to Reach Guinness Storehouse

The Guinness Storehouse is located at St. James’s Gate, Dublin 8. Here are some ways to get there:

  • By foot: If you’re in central Dublin, it’s about a 20-minute walk from Temple Bar.
  • By bus: Take routes 13, 40, 123, or 92 from the city centre.
  • By tram: Take the Luas Red Line to James’s stop, then it’s a short walk.
  • By hop-on-hop-off bus: Most Dublin sightseeing buses stop at the Storehouse.

From my experience, taking the bus is the most convenient option if you’re not up for a walk. The 123 route, in particular, drops you right at the Storehouse’s doorstep.

Inside the Guinness Storehouse

As you step into the Guinness Storehouse, you’re not just entering a building, you’re stepping into a pint glass. Literally! The seven-story structure is designed to resemble a giant pint of Guinness. From my experience, the best way to tackle this behemoth is to start at the bottom and work your way up, just like the bubbles in a freshly poured pint.

Touch the grain! Walk through every step!

One of the most fascinating parts of the tour is learning about the brewing process. You’ll discover the four key ingredients that go into every pint of Guinness: water, barley, hops, and yeast. The tour guides (part of the connoisseur experience) are incredibly knowledgeable and, in my opinion, they strike the perfect balance between informative and entertaining.

The Perfect Pour: Become a Certified Guinness Pourer

Now, here’s where things get really exciting. You’ll have the chance to learn the art of pouring the perfect pint of Guinness. It’s a six-step process that takes exactly 119.5 seconds. Personally speaking, I found this to be one of the highlights of the tour. There’s something incredibly satisfying about watching the surge and settle of a perfectly poured pint.

What I really like is the culmination of the Guinness tour at the Gravity Bar. Perched atop the Storehouse, it offers a 360-degree view of Dublin. Sipping on your perfectly poured pint (included with your ticket) while taking in the cityscape is, in my view, an experience that’s hard to beat.

The Legacy of John Jameson

Just a short jaunt from the Guinness Storehouse, you’ll find the Jameson Distillery on Bow Street. Established in 1780, Jameson has been warming the cockles of Irish hearts (and indeed, hearts worldwide) for over two centuries. If you ask me, the story of John Jameson is as rich and complex as the whiskey itself.

Reaching Jameson Distillery Bow St.

Jameson Distillery is located at Bow St, Smithfield Village, Dublin 7. Here’s how you can get there:

  • On foot: It’s about a 15-minute walk from O’Connell Street in the city centre.
  • By tram: Take the Luas Red Line to Smithfield stop, it’s just a 2-minute walk from there.
  • By bus: Routes 37, 39, 70 and 746 all stop nearby.

I think that taking the Luas is the easiest option, especially if you’re coming from the Guinness Storehouse. It’s quick, and the short walk from the stop to the distillery gives you a chance to see a bit of the charming Smithfield area. Or just walk it as it’s only around a 20 minute walk.

One of the most enlightening parts of the tour, in my opinion, is the comparative tasting. You’ll get to sample 3 different Jameson whiskeys. It’s a fantastic way to appreciate the unique characteristics of Irish whiskey. Black Barrel is just, wow!
