Brief Overview
By March, spring has sprung throughout the northern hemisphere, bringing warmer weather to many popular tourist spots after their winter depression. Meanwhile, in the southern hemisphere, temperatures are beginning to fall, drawing adventurers and bargain hunters in search of fringe-season deals.
It’s a good time to pack your bags, no matter you’re looking for. Here are the top destinations for the month of March.
Morocco
On the coast of Morocco between Agadir and Essaouira, you’ll find a number of surf camps, most of which are located in and around Taghazout and the more sedate fishing village of Tamraght. Between October and March, when the weather begins to warm up but the waves are still large, long, and regular, surfers can count on a solid season. Sunrise yoga, grabbing a board, and paddling out to the greatest breaks are the standard fare at most camps, with time left over to peruse the galleries and souqs of Essaouira’s walled medina.
The Maldives
The Maldives are filled with tourist cliches, such as night snorkelling, island hopping, and the azure Indian Ocean washing onto ice-white shores. The island is beautiful all year, but in March you can swim with manta rays and sharks or relax in a secluded beach cottage and enjoy the mild 30°C weather. The best hotel is The Den at Soneva Fushi, a tech-free zone equipped with tunnels, treasure maps, and a pirate ship designed for would-be Peter Pans and Wendy’s.
Gran Canaria, Spain
Why March? Take some time for relaxation to refresh your body and spirit in spring.
With daily highs in March that consistently exceed 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) and more than seven hours of sunshine, the Spanish island of Gran Canaria is ideal for a rejuvenating getaway among the sand dunes. Several yoga, meditation, tai chi, and qigong retreats are located in and around Las Palmas, the culturally diversified capital of Gran Canaria, the lovely belly button of the Canary Islands. Choose a spot that best suits your needs; you’ll have the rest of the day to do anything you like after your morning tai chi class. Copenhagen
The capital of Denmark, which is actually spread across two islands near the coast, is a great place to visit in March. Wearing multiple layers may be necessary, as highs rarely get over 5C/41F, but this is a minor price to pay if you want to avoid the throngs of frustrated tourists who arrive later in the year. Everything from the National Museum of Denmark to Amalienborg Palace is available to visitors.
North Wales
This question has to be answered, but why now? Spend time in nature amidst springtime crocuses and lambs.
Lambs graze between clumps of buttery yellow daffodils as spring arrives in Wales. A trip to the Welsh countryside in March is a terrific way to shake off the winter blues and see some of the UK’s less-visited landscape, despite the fact that the weather is never completely reliable in Wales. The Dee Valley is a year-round playground for outdoor enthusiasts; the River Dee is one of the few rivers in the world with consistently excellent whitewater conditions, making it ideal for rafting, kayaking, body-boating, and even stand-up paddleboarding.
Naples
Why March? Early spring is a great time to enjoy the city’s quieter spots and its grittier surroundings.
There is no shame in Naples. The Bay of Naples, under the watchful eye of Mount Vesuvius, is the dramatic backdrop for this sprawling city in southern Italy, which also happens to be home to the best pizzas in Italy. There is a pleasant temperature range in March that is out of season for tourists. This means that the must-see Museo Archeologico Nazionale (filled with Pompeiian relics) and the ancient city of Pompeii (a 45-minute train ride south) are less crowded than usual.
South Africa
The very end of this great continent is where you should go if you want an action-packed safari. There are fewer tourists and cheaper rates during the end of the rainy season in South Africa’s 19 national parks, provided you don’t mind the occasional afternoon downpour. Kruger National Park in the north-east is the place to go if you want to see the “big five,” but the beautiful Garden Route in the south is where you want to go if you want some Out of Africa-style romance while you follow wildlife on horseback. Little Karoo is the nearest safari to Cape Town, so it’s a good option if you don’t want to venture far from the city.
Sicily, Italy
In March, southeast Sicily is the warmest region of Italy. Catania, the current capital of this eternally amazing island, and Syracuse, the historical capital of the island, are the sunniest and hottest cities in Europe, respectively. In March, there is less risk of a heatwave, but you can still expect eight hours of sunshine a day. The mild Mediterranean spring weather is perfect for visiting the region’s baroque cities (such as Modica, Ragusa, and Noto) and ancient Greek and Roman ruins. During the summer months, the Vendicari Nature Reserve’s dune and lagoon system is home to some of the nicest (and quietest) beaches in all of Italy, not to mention a wide variety of migratory birds making their way back from Africa.
Costa Rica
Experience breathtaking landscapes, such as coastlines, cloud forests, volcanoes, and rushing rivers.
Costa Rica is a small country with a diverse ecosystem due in large part to the country’s favourable climate, which supports the country’s abundant rain forests. The Pacific and Caribbean beaches, as well as the highlands, will all be dry(er) in March (though showers are always likely). Plus, it’s after the busiest time of year in the United States, so there are fewer tourists. Determining what to do while there will be the most challenging aspect.
Istanbul
Istanbul, one of the world’s most interesting cities, is located on both the European and Asian sides of the Bosphorus Strait. The European side is where you’ll find the majority of the city’s attractions, such as the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and many more. There are many fine, sunny days and warm temperatures in March.
