I didn’t intend to slow right down, but one wrong turn and I found myself in a tea room with muddy boots drying by the stove and a local telling me the best place for an honest pie. That, more than any guidebook, is what this loop is about. It’s quiet canal towns with bookshops that smell like history, moorland you can lose an hour on, and seaside towns that give you proper fish and chips and a breath of salt air.
Do this over a long weekend or stretch it out for four relaxed days. Lets get to it…

Total Distance: ~155 miles / 250 km (loop)
Recommended Time: 2–4 days (weekend lovers can condense to 1.5 days)
Start/End: Hebden Bridge (or start anywhere on the loop)
Best time to go: Late spring to early autumn for milder weather and café terraces.

📍 Hebden Bridge
Wander the canal towpath, browse vintage shops and pop up to Heptonstall for the ruined church and moor views. On a Saturday the market hums with local stalls.
💡 Good to know: If you like books, head to the secondhand shops and leave an hour to get lost.
📍 Ilkley
Clock a short walk on Ilkley Moor for open views, then refuel in a proper tearoom. The town centre is compact and friendly.
🔹 Tinker’s Tip: The Cow and Calf rocks are an easy photo stop above the town and a short drive or walk from the centre.
📍 Pateley Bridge
Tiny streets are full of charm. Visit the sweet shop and take a riverside stroll. It’s a mellow place to slow down.

Walk under the viaduct, explore the castle gardens and watch the riverboats. There’s a lovely path that gives different postcard views of the town.

📍 Wetherby
Smart Georgian streets and a good riverside lunch scene. A practical pause for food and a stretch.

📍 Malton
Plan an afternoon here if you love cheese, bread and local produce. The food market and delis are excellent.
💡 Fact: Saturdays are the best for markets. If you miss it, local delis still do brilliant sandwiches.
📍 Pickering
If you have time, take the North Yorkshire Moors Railway on a steam leg to Grosmont. Pickering itself has a nice market square and Beck Isle Museum.
💡 Good to know: Book steam tickets in advance in summer.
📍 Whitby
Climb the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey, mooch in the old town and eat fish and chips down by the harbour. The coastline here is cinematic.
Tinker’s Tip: The abbey is a great sunset spot but it gets breezy up there, so bring a layer.
