The combination of natural beauty, elegant villas, and laid-back Italian charm is simply irresistible, and from personal experience there’s no better way to enjoy it than getting on a boat and just sailing around it!

Best Time to Visit Lake Como

Deciding when to visit Lake Como is like choosing between gelato flavours, there’s no bad choice, but some might suit your taste better than others. Don’t forget it is in the mountains so one minute it can be raining and the next it will be sunny again. That’s from my experience anyway! Here’s a quick rundown:

  • Spring (April to June): The weather’s mild, flowers are blooming, and crowds are thinner. Perfect for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
  • Summer (July to August): Peak season with warm temperatures and buzzing atmosphere. Ideal for swimming and boating, but expect more tourists and higher prices.
  • Autumn (September to October): Cooler temperatures and stunning foliage make for great hiking and photography opportunities.
  • Winter (November to March): Quieter and cheaper, with a magical atmosphere. Some attractions may have limited hours, but it’s great for a cosy retreat.

Ultimately, the best time to visit depends on your preferences. Fancy a lively summer holiday? July and August are your best bet. Looking for a quieter, more budget-friendly trip? Consider the shoulder seasons or even winter.

Getting to Lake Como

Getting to Lake Como is easier than mastering the art of pasta-making (though arguably less delicious). Here are your main options:

  1. By Air: The closest airport is Milan’s Malpensa International Airport. From there, you can:
    • Rent a car (about 1.5 hours drive)
    • Take a train to Como (about 2 hours with one change)
    • Book a private transfer for a more luxurious option
  2. By Train: If you’re already in Italy, trains run regularly from Milan to Como (about 40 minutes) and Varenna (about 1 hour).
  3. By Car: Driving gives you more flexibility to explore. The journey from Milan takes about an hour, but remember that parking can be tricky in some lakeside towns.
  4. By Bus: For budget travellers, buses run from Milan to various towns around the lake.
  5. By Tour: This was the option I did as it included everything I wanted to see. The Tour included Lake Como boat tour, Bellagio, and Lugano.

Pro tip: Once you’re at the lake, the most scenic way to get around is by boat. The public ferry service is efficient and offers stunning views of the lakeside villages. Cheap too!

Things to See and Do at Como

Lake Como is like a treasure trove of experiences, from exploring historic villas to indulging in water sports. Let me show you some of my personal favourites:

Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio

These three towns form the heart of the Lake Como experience:

  • Bellagio: Known as the “Pearl of Lake Como“, Bellagio is famous for its cobblestone lanes, elegant shops, and stunning views. It is an absolute dream of a place! Don’t miss the gardens of Villa Melzi.
  • Varenna: A charming fishing village with colourful houses and a romantic waterfront promenade. Visit Villa Monastero for its beautiful botanical gardens.
  • Menaggio: A lively town with a beautiful lakefront promenade, perfect for people-watching and gelato-eating.

Villa del Balbianello

Star Wars fans, listen up! This stunning 18th-century villa was featured in “Attack of the Clones”. Even if you’re not a fan of the force, the villa’s terraced gardens and intricate architecture are sure to impress. Fun fact: It’s also a popular wedding venue, so you might spot a happy couple during your visit! I can’t imagine it is a cheap wedding!

Other Villas to Visit in Lake Como

Lake Como is dotted with magnificent villas, each with its own unique charm. Here are a few more you shouldn’t miss:

  • Villa Carlotta: Famous for its stunning botanical gardens and art collection.
  • Villa Serbelloni: Perched on a hill above Bellagio, offering panoramic views of the lake.
  • Villa Olmo: A neoclassical villa in Como, often hosting art exhibitions.

Wander Around

One of the best ways to experience Lake Como is simply to wander, like I did. Lose yourself in the narrow streets of the lakeside towns, discover hidden gems, and soak in the laid-back Italian atmosphere. Keep an eye out for:

  • Charming piazzas perfect for people-watching
  • Local markets selling fresh produce and artisanal goods
  • Hidden churches with beautiful frescoes
  • Quaint cafes serving excellent espresso and pastries

Varenna

Varenna deserves a special mention. This picturesque village is often overlooked by tourists in favour of its more famous neighbour, Bellagio. However, Varenna offers a more authentic and less crowded Lake Como experience, which is why I consider it to be better than Bellagio. Don’t miss:

  • The “Passeggiata degli Innamorati” (Lovers’ Walk), a romantic lakeside promenade
  • Castello di Vezio, a hilltop castle offering panoramic views of the lake
  • The colourful fishermen’s houses along the waterfront
